12 ways to ruin your laptop without realizing it.
The laptop is one of the most common tools of our time. Although it has become part of our daily life, we do not always think about whether we treat it well. However, specific details can affect the operation of your machine.
WE invite you to review the list of the most common mistakes we make when using our laptop so that you can extend its life.
1. Don’t use your laptop next to your pets
Your kitty might look cute next to your laptop. But, don’t encourage this habit of hers and not let him sit on top of it. Cats are attracted to the heat of the running machine, but their fur can get into the vents or cover the internal fan. In the end, this leads to overheating and worse performance of your device. It can also get damaged by cockroaches and ants that get inside. So stop eating while using your computer – this can attract insects.
2. Don’t make unnecessary movements
If your laptop doesn’t have an SSD drive but instead has a mechanical hard drive, try to treat it more carefully while using the programs that use that space. Its parts are mobile, so when you shake your laptop or move it suddenly, this can interfere with its operation and cause-specific data loss.
3. Do not coil or bend the cables
Your laptop charger cable may appear resistant to twisting or bending at first glance, but it is weaker than it seems. Laptops must be mobile, so the wires are made of light and thin materials. Do not wrap the cord over other objects, especially if they have sharp edges. Don’t leave the cable dangling when charging your laptop – this loosens the input and can lead to future battery problems.
4. Don’t keep your laptop always charging
Technically, it is impossible to overcharge the battery, as modern laptop models use lithium-ion batteries. But the controller that protects the battery can be damaged from overcharging. The excessive load causes it to overheat and end up breaking it down.
5. Do not open your laptop holding the screen by the edge
The screen is very fragile, so you should not open it by holding it. And if this is obvious, you should also be careful with the lid of the laptop. We usually accommodate the screen by having information on it by one of the upper ends. The other stands still, and, itself, you fold the screen. To make your laptop last longer, accommodate the screen by holding it in the middle of the frame.
6. Don’t keep your laptop on your knees
Although the word “laptop” comes from the word “knees” (“lap”), it is not good to use the device in this way. This can block the vents and cause them to overheat.
7. Do not place your laptop next to other electronic devices and magnets
In general, the hard disk uses a magnetized system to store the information. The proximity of the laptop to magnets or other electronic devices can cause magnetic interference. And this causes damage and data loss, so keep your device away from these objects.
8. Do not start the cable with sudden movements
Even if you’re in a hurry, always remember to unplug your laptop carefully. Sudden movements can damage both the port and the cable itself, and this can cause problems with charging.
9. Don’t underestimate the cover
The laptop sleeve and bag should be soft and not have hard edges or other details. The internal details of the device are sensitive to movement, so it is not a good idea to carry your laptop in your backpack along with other things.
10. Do not press the screen when cleaning it
We know that it is not good to clean the laptop screen with water and regular cloth. But even if you use a microfiber cloth and special liquid, don’t overdo it: the screens are too thin, so don’t put too much pressure on them.
11. Don’t keep your laptop on all the time
If you spend a couple of hours working on your laptop, don’t always keep it on. This is how the hard drive and cooling system wear out. If you use the device multiple times during the day, hybridize it.
12. Do not put cups with drinks on top
Many times we drink tea or coffee while working on the laptop. But a hot cup of tea can damage the appliance even if you don’t spill anything on it. Do not place cups with hot drinks on top of the closed lid of the laptop – this can damage the screen. And much less put the cup on the open laptop: we all know how dangerous it is to spill liquids.
Signs of an upcoming laptop failure
The tips above will help you extend the life of your laptop. Now let’s look at cases where you should consider getting it serviced before it’s too late.
- The hard disk makes a lot of noise or runs slowly.
- Your laptop started to be noticeably slower, and it can “hang” for no reason (for example, while you are reading something).
- The fans make more noise.
- Strange sounds are heard when you turn on a machine that did not exist before.
- Your laptop restarts itself.
- There are many errors in the Windows history. To check the errors, go to “My computer” – “Administration” – “Event viewer” and check the record.
